Eye Candy Journals

Leather-journals-pic

Eye Candy Journals
Date: Saturday, July 9, 9-4:00 pm

Do you love the smell of leather? Then this workshop’s for you! In this workshop, you’ll learn 5 bindings that use only leather, paper, and thread – no glue needed! For each binding, you will sew 3 sections of folded papers into covers cut from one piece of leather. These bindings are very flexible and allow the books to open completely flat, making them perfect for use as sketchbooks or journals.
Each sewing technique creates a different decorative sewing pattern on the spine and we will try out different closure methods. No previous experience is required – this is a great class for a beginner. You can even bring in your own leather to customize your book.
Note: There will be a scheduled lunch break.

Temari Basics

TEMARI BASICS: SIMPLY ELEGANT EMBROIDERED THREAD BALL
Date: Sunday, November 15, 2:30-5:30 pm

Description: In this class, students will learn to make a 6- or 8-segment lozenge-style temari ball, based on a traditional Japanese design. This simple design, which results in a 4”-diameter ball, teaches the basic skills of preparing, wrapping, marking, and stitching the ball. In addition to learning these skills, we will discuss color choices and materials, options for embellishing the ball beyond the basic stitched design, consider books and other instructional materials for furthering students’ temari knowledge, and touch on the history of this ancient craft. No prior skills are required, but students might choose to begin their temari journey with the “Small Embroidered Temari Ball Ornament” class offered in October.

Sufficient materials to complete one temari ball will be provided. Students may be able to complete their temari ball during the scheduled class time, but if not, they will leave class with the knowledge and materials needed to complete it on their own. Students should bring their own small craft scissors and a pin cushion.
Who: Adults Limit: 8  Minimum: 4
Instructor: India Tresselt
Cost: $30.00.  Materials fee payable to instructor: $15

MATERIALS FEE $15.00 includes Styrofoam balls, yarn and thread for wrapping, pins for marking, embroidery needle, and perle cotton and metallic thread for stitching. Sufficient yarn and thread will be provided to make one ball per student. Students may keep pins and needles for future projects.

Small Ornament

SMALL EMBROIDERED TEMARI BALL ORNAMENT
Date: Sunday, October 25, 3:00-5:00 pm

Description: Learn to make a simple but stunning holiday ornament based on the Japanese traditional art of temari! Students will learn some temari basics: preparing and wrapping the ball with yarn and thread, marking the ball for six star/snowflake motifs, and finally stitching the ball. These ornaments, approximately 2” in diameter, make great holiday gifts, stocking stuffers, or hostess gifts, or you might choose to make enough to fill a bowl or basket for a festive, colorful, and sparkly centerpiece on your holiday table. This class will teach a complete project on its own, but students might want to expand their temari knowledge with the “Temari Basics” class offered in November.

Sufficient materials will be provided to work on one or two small ornaments in class. Students may be able to complete one ornament during the scheduled class time, but if not, they will have sufficient knowledge and materials to complete the ball on their own. Students should bring their own small craft scissors and a pin cushion.
Who: Adults Limit: 8 Minimum: 4
Instructor: India Tresselt
Cost: $20.00, Materials fee paid to instructor: $10.00

MATERIALS FEE $10.00 includes Styrofoam balls, yarn and thread for wrapping, pins for marking, embroidery needle, metallic thread for stitching.
