Sad News

Dear Friends,
I learned today that on Tuesday, we lost a good friend, artist and supreme supporter of our little gallery. My good friend, Diane David passed away after a short illness. I am saddened beyond belief and wonder at how this can really be. But even in this dark moment, I can hear Diane’s infectious laugh. She would not let me or anyone else mire themselves in this awful truth. She would want us to pick ourselves up and get on with it!

I know that Diane wanted more than anything to make art. She threw herself into her painting this year harder and better than anyone I know. She taught classes at the gallery, went on an art retreat to Virginia, and took several on-line courses and she pushed herself further and further. Diane painted what she loved…her dogs. llamas, and even an occasional goat or two. She wanted us all to value the silliness all around us. She painted everything with a whimsical air! She brought that whimsy into the gallery! I loved her for being so free with what and how she painted. Her spirit is all over the gallery.

I miss her.

Diane so wanted Grand Isle Art Works to succeed. She was a one-woman rooting section for us, full of heart and soul. She made me feel like I could be a painter, too. And, I was taking courage from her. She was the impetus behind our Thursday evening plein air painting group.

I think she would like us to consider keeping this tradition going.  Folks outdoors, painting, chatting and laughing together as they create art that makes them happy!  So, let’s plan on a weekly:

Landgirl Forever Paint Out on Thursdays 5:00ish!

Hope to see you there!

Cafe at the Gallery is OPEN!

Zach is a cooking fool these days!  We hung out the cafe sign and folks are stopping by!  Zach has a smile on his face from ear to ear!  And the reviews are great.  Gallery wood artist, Russ fellows stopped by with friend, George for a bite to eat.  They loved it!

Lunch at the Cafe at the Gallery - artist Russ FellowsCome on out soon!  The Cafe is open from 10-3:00 Wednesday – Saturday, 9-3:00 for Sunday Brunch!

Meet Zach!

Zach Labelle, chef at Cafe at the GalleryOn June 16, Zach Labelle will officially open the Cafe at the Gallery as its chef supreme.  Zach Labelle was born in Hinesburg and went to CVU high school. He started finding his way around a kitchen at 16 and worked as a dishwasher at Mexicali and Wake Robin prior to graduation. He was the Garde Manger or “keeper of the pantry” at Bistro Sauce in Shelburne where he worked under the tutelage of Bill Iliff, currently one of the chefs at the Inn at Shelburne Farms. After taking a break from cooking and traveling to California and Las Vegas Zack found employment at various food related venues in and around Burlington. He ended up at Healthy Living in Burlington where he has worked for the last 4 years. His assignments included head brunch cook and kitchen supervisor. His recent move to South Hero from Burlington was already in the works before he heard about our opening at the gallery. Some things are just meant to be…

New Beginnings…again!

Each year, we learn something new.  And each year we are given a challenge that, for a bit of time, seems insurmountable.  And, if patterns can be true, we tend to figure out the challenge and end up with something even better than our original plan.

Stay tuned for one of these “better yet” solutions!  Our fingers are crossed.  The construction is almost complete.  Our hearts and souls are committed to solving this one.  Watch for signs of our newest addition:

Cafe at the Gallery

Simple cooking using local foods and spirits!

Our newest addition, 3 season dining room

In the mean time, check out our great slate of classes!  Our artists are the best at what they do and we are fortunate to have them share their talents here at Grand Isle Art Works!  You can register right on the website – or give a call over to the gallery and we will reserve your spot.
