Jim is out and about…

…well, kind of! He is using an old fashioned walker that he bumps along in front of him — then follows with a big HOP!!! He can move around – but no one better be chasing him as he will lose everytime.

Today he made his first excursion to the gallery. He is perched on the front porch waiting for folks to come by. It is a strangely quiet Saturday!

I bet if you came by the gallery, he’d let you sign his cast!!!

Happy Summer!

The birds are singing, the grass is growing, the flowers are blooming — AND the gallery is open 7 days a week 10-4:00 pm! Join our resident “hooker” Lynn on Mondays and Tuesdays. She will amaze you with her hooking skills! Really.  Patrick Leahy was truly amazed!

Come visit with me – Ellen on the other days. I am filling in for Jim as he heals from his recent foot surgery. I am ever-so-hopeful that I will be able to prop him up in the gallery soon! Just sitting is getting pretty old for Jim!

We’d love to show you around the gallery.

Where’s Jim? (and what’s with the crazy hours…)

Jim getting ready to leave the hospital.
All dressed and nowhere to go!

On June 12th, Jim had some much needed surgery on his foot.  The surgery went well and we are all hoping it will help him walk better in the future.  But, for now — he can put no weight on his foot for 6 weeks.  Currently he is at home propped up in an oversize recliner which is doubling as his bed.  Actually it is not a bad life – he is getting waited on hand and foot.  Even Elvis, our yellow lab is being ultra considerate to dear Jim.

So, that leaves me – Ellen – to deal with all things home, farm, work, and gallery.  Yikes! So, if I am a bit late to open the gallery, it means I am chasing goats, chickens, and alpacas at home.  If I have to close early, it means a doctors appointment for Jim.

I will try to anticipate any nudges in the gallery schedule.  I will post to both facebook, twitter, and our website.  Hopefully once he gets a more substantial cast on his foot, I can park Jim at the gallery and still tend the animals at home!

Whooeee…what a ride!

Are you game?  Grand Isle Art Works will offer a weekly knitting location for folks to create a Welcome Blanket.   The Welcome Blanket Project aims to connect people already living in the United States residents with our country’s new immigrants through stories and handmade blankets, providing both symbolic and literal comfort and warmth. At the same time, the project offers a positive, hands-on way to understand the scope of a 2000-mile border wall and to subvert it from an idea of exclusion to one of inclusion.

We offer all Yellow Dog Farm yarns at 10% off to anyone making a blanket.  We can commune on the gallery deck to sip and knit.  The cafe has a variety of soft drinks as well as beers and wines for sale.

A welcome blanket is traditionally created to lovingly mark the arrival of a new person into the world. In the Welcome Blanket Project, each handmade blanket is a physical manifestation of this celebration of new refugees and other immigrants: “Welcome to the United States and your new life here! We are so glad you have arrived.”

The blankets will be displayed together at the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago between July 18 and December 17. We are starting with an empty gallery space and displaying the blanket packages as they arrive. Final due date to send for the the exhibition is September 5.  This is an incredible opportunity to have your work in a museum show. Admission to the museum is always free and open to all.
